"The Golden Goose": The hero is the youngest of three brothers (the Simpleton; the Least of Three), given the nickname Dummling ("little fool"). His older brothers are sent into the forest to chop wood, fortified with a rich cake and a bottle of wine. Each meets a little gray man (the Disguised Helper) who begs a morsel to eat and a swallow of ale, but is rebuffed. The brothers each meet with an accident and is taken home. Dummling, sent out with a biscuit cooked in the ashes of the hearth and soured beer, is generous with the little old man and is rewarded with a golden goose (the Fairy Gift).
"The Three Bears": A family of three bears (a mother, a father, and a cub) live in a quite civilized house in the woods. One day, waiting for their porridge to cool, they leave the house unlocked as they go for a walk in the woods. While they are out, Goldilocks comes to the house and makes a little mischief.
"The Three Little Pigs": Mother Pig sends her three little piglets out into the world. The first little pig builds a house of straw, the second a house of sticks and the third a house of bricks. A wolf blows down the first two houses, but cannot huff and puff hard enough to blow down the house bricks. He attempts to trick the third little pig out of his house, but the pig outsmarts him at every turn.
"Tom Thumb": Tom Thumb is the name of a traditional hero in English folklore who was no bigger than his father's thumb. Young Tom is full of mischief and frequently accident-prone. He has many adventures and finally winds up in the king's court where he becomes a favorite.
